Welcome back, we hope you have had an enjoyable summer and are ready to embrace being in Year 5! Over the next six weeks, Year Five will be following a unit of work called ‘Space Scientists’ which focuses on how our understanding of space came about and the space race.

We have two classes with 5H taught by Miss Haynes and 5S taught by Mrs Scott. Our TA is Miss Pearce.

5H- PE on Monday and Thursday

5S- Tuesday and Thursday

Homework sent on a Friday and returned on Wednesday- information about the spellings are outlined on the homework menu.

English

This half term we will explore a range of writing genres such as biographies and poems that use word play. We will also revisit and build on our understanding of writing playscrips and narratives, including the various writing devices used within these genres. We will be finishing our reading of ‘Boy in the Tower’, which we have greatly enjoyed and move on to a new text called ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell.

Maths

This half term we are completing our Statistics unit and moving onto Shape, Position and Direction. Within these topics we will learn about angles and lengths within shapes, coordinates and how to read and plot them and translating shapes.

History and Geography

During Summer 1, Year Five will be starting a unit of work called ‘The Holiday Show’ which is mainly a geography topic examining out responsibilities as a tourist and the impact that our choice of holiday and travel destination can have on the human and physical environment.
