Downe Camp 2017

During the last week of last half term, Year 5 spent three wonderful days at the Scout Activity Camp in Downe. On arrival, activities started almost immediately and included archery, Jacob’s ladder, abseiling, crate stacking, go carting, incline climbing and the zip wire. Everyone plucked up the courage to give almost every activity a go and all were incredibly proud of their achievements.  Evenings were spent playing on the adjoining fields and, once it was dark, we went on a spooky torch-lit walk through the woods one night, the other night we spent round the camp fire singing songs with the scout leaders.  We all had a great time and the glorious weather helped to make it a very special few days.

EYFS Trip to the farm

EYFS had a lovely trip to the farm last week. They loved learning about the different animals and enjoyed activities on the field in the afternoon.

Art and DT

This half term, Year Six have been sewing tie-dyed drawstring bags, 6T finished theirs this week and they looked sensational! Year Three have been busy designing and printing Andy Warhol inspired T shirts as part of their fashion topic. Meanwhile in Year Two, children have been learning about artists of the past. This week, Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa was the artwork used for inspiration, children drew their own versions and then had great fun taking photos of each other in the Mona Lisa pose.

Google Expeditions

Today the children (and teachers) had the opportunity to visit the bottom of the sea, the Houses of Parliament, the Great Barrier Reef and even the surface of the moon thanks to a visit from the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program. With Google Expeditions, which is a free app, the children were able to take immersive virtual journeys. The app can be downloaded from both the iTunes and Google Play stores.

World Book Day!

On Thursday 2nd March 2017 we celebrated World Book Day! The costumes from both the children and the staff were absolutely fantastic and great fun was had by all! It truly was a memorable day!

Back by popular demand is our ‘Get Caught Reading’ competition whereby we are aiming to find the child with most extreme reading pose! We have extended the deadline by a week so photographic evidence needs to be handed to Miss Gates or Mr Lee by Friday 10th March 2017 and the winners will be announced the following week. There are book vouchers for the most extreme picture up for grabs!

Road Safety Talk

On Thursday 2nd February 2017 a Road Safety Officer from Bromley Council came into Stewart Fleming and talked to the year 6 pupils about issues surrounding road safety. The topics covered were the wearing of seat belts and pedestrian safety. The emphasis of the lesson was on taking responsibility for your own actions, making good choices and encouraging others to do the same.

SEW much fun in DT!

n their Art/DT lessons, Year 2 and Year 5 have been practicing their sewing skills. Linking into their IPC topic about toys, Year 2 have been designing and sewing glove puppets.  Their designs included superheroes, ballerinas, animals and even a Santa!

Meanwhile, in the spirit of wartime "make do and mend", Year 5 have been using odd scraps of material to make keepsakes. They had to cut a pattern, sew, stuff and embellish their designs. It took a lot of resilience but they have produced some really beautiful keepsakes which hopefully they will keep for a long time.

Creativity Day

On Tuesday 4th July, the whole school had a day dedicated to the creative arts. Drama, dancing, music, drawing, painting, model making – you name it we had a go at it! Everyone also took part in this year’s “Shape Game” competition.  There were some wonderful entries where children turned the squiggle into mountains, ice creams and superheroes to name a few.  We have had some incredible entries in the Parents' and Carers' shape game competition too. All winners will be announced next week.  If you would like to see the entries and your children's art books, please come along to the Art Room on Open Evening next week.

Year 6 Trip to Chessington

Year 6 had a fabulous day at Chessington World of Adventures yesterday!  They were fortunate to spend the day in a fairly empty park so children were able to enjoy at least 8 rides, some more!
Needless to say, they were impeccably behaved, and all honoured the 1 minute silence with respect.  A great way to celebrate the end of their SATs! Well done Year 6!

What an amazing Cross Country Event on Saturday 11th March!

Teams of KS2 girls and boys greatly enjoyed the day and gave it thier all in  thier respective races.  The race had it’s biggest turnout to date with well over 300 children per race. All the staff and parents are incredibly proud of all involved and we can’t wait for next year!

Fireman Gary visits EYFS

EYFS were lucky enough to have a fireman visit which linked to our topic of Superheroes! During the visit we found out how to stay safe in the event of a fire, what information to include during a 999 call and learnt the different parts of a fire truck. After we looked at the clothing a fireman has to wear, some of us even tried it on! To follow up on the important information given, our homework in the upcoming weeks will be to learn what to do in an emergency and also know our addresses.

School Disco

Thursday 26th January saw the PTA Bright Light and Neon discos for EYFS, Years 1 and 2 and for Key Stage 2.  It was a huge success!  Children and staff all enjoyed dressing up in their brightest clothing, fashioned with glow sticks provided by the PTA and even neon face paint!  The idea for this theme was decided by the Junior Travel Ambassador reps in Year 6 - they wanted to remind children how to travel safely in these dark winter months.

Visit to Ted Hill

Earlier this month, Rea our Head Girl visited Red Hill Primary School to share ideas across the Pioneer Academy. She has written this report on her visit:

Burnt Oak Primary School and I went on a tour of the school which homes over 700 children! Unfortunately Liam, our Head Boy, could not be there as he was competing in the athletics competition.

Once I got to Red Hill, I met the other children who were on the school council or House Captains. The children of Red Hill Primary School are sorted into four houses – red, blue, green and yellow. Happily they showed us around their school which has: a goldfish, a gargantuan assembly hall with a stage, putting green and a small allotment. As that took us all morning, we then went to lunch.

After lunch we all sat down to compare our schools and school council. Sadly, after that we had to go home. It was a fabulous day, where I learnt a lot about how I as Head Girl could help to improve our school.

Sky Academy

This week our year 5 and 6 'more able' writers were given the opportunity to visit the Sky Television Studios in Osterley.  As part of the Sky Academy they attended the skills studio where they spent a fast paced but exhilarating afternoon planning, writing, filming and then editing their own news report.

They also had the opportunity to visit the Sky Sports Studios where they watched the presenters preparing for their broadcast. The presenters even gave the children a wave, which made their day.

Pioneer Golf Tournament

Victory for the amazing Stewart Fleming Golf Team who won the Pioneer Golf tournament which took place on Tuesday 11th July!

The heated 9 hole course at Bromley Golf Course Magpie Hall Lane, wasn’t the easiest of courses to complete, not to mention the excessive wind that the golfers had to contend with during the tournament. Despite the adverse weather, the SF team soldiered on and were triumphant in the end!

Well done to everyone who took part on Tuesday, we are so proud of all of you!

Natalia Cohen Visit

On the 18th November, we had the privilege of going to a talk by Natalia Cohen at Burnt Oak Junior School. Natalia Cohen is famous for rowing the whole Pacific Ocean with four of her friends. We really enjoyed the journey to Burnt Oak and mixing with children from other schools in our academy. Natalia taught us a lot of inspirational quotes such as 'faith is the first step, even when you can't see the top of the staircase' which really inspired us to persevere with our own challenges.
